Do you wonder how much baggage is allowed on Lufthansa flights? Read on and find out all the essential information you need before your departure.

Lufthansa – carry-on baggage

Passengers travelling with Lufthansa are allowed to take one piece of hand baggage onboard. Its weight must not exceed 8 kg and its dimensions must be smaller than 55×40×23 cm. You can also carry some additional items, such as handbag, laptop bag or shoulder bag which has to be smaller than 30×40×10 cm.

Those travelling with infants are allowed to take carrycots, foldable pushchairs or buggies into the cabin.

Lufthansa free baggage allowance

Generally, you are allowed to have 1 piece of checked baggage on Lufthansa flights for free. Its maximum weight is 23 kg and the sum of its dimensions must not exceed 158 cm.

There are also some exceptions to these rules. While flying to and from Japan, Central and West Africa, or between USA/Canada and South Africa, India, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar, UAE and Iran, you are allowed 2 pieces of checked baggage, 23 kg each. On the journeys starting in Brazil, 2 bags, 32 kg each can be checked in. They are included in the ticket price.

Lufthansa excess baggage

If you find out that your free baggage allowance is insufficient, you will pay excess baggage fees.

size and weight up to 23 kg 24 – 32 kg 33 – 45 kg
up to 158 cm x €50/€100 €100/€200
more than 158 cm €100/€200 €150/€300 €200/€400

    Hi Kresimir,
I would recommend to contact Lufthansa directly as some extra fragile items may require some special treatment.

Hi, i am a seaman and would like to ask how to put in a plane a model of wooden sailship in a carton box. The total weight of abbt 3 kos, dimmensions of abt 800 x 600 x 600 mm, extremely fragile?

    Many thanks.

  • Petra

    Hi Ingrid,
always happy to help! As for your golfbag - the rules say you can carry only 1 piece up to 23 kg - so even if you carry two small pieces that are together less than 23 kg you will have to pay for an extra baggage. You can try to fit the golfbag into one bag with other things or you can try attach it to your baggage to "make" one bag out of two - however I would not recomment this for golfbag. In fact, there are special rules for carrying sports equipment - the fee for carrying your golfbag varies according to its weight and flight - all details about sports equipment incl fees can be found here http://goo.gl/sXnxtB

As for 158 cm - it is the total sum of width + height + depth of your checked baggage.

If you are still unsure I would recomment to contact Lufthansa directly (and again I would recommend to check both http://goo.gl/dwGSj and http://goo.gl/AR2hCY). Enjoy your trip to Joburg!

  • ingrid

Petra, Thanks for yr answer that bringing one bag extra from23 kg to Joburg will be €75. Another question: I have a small golfbag that I will carry back from Johannesburg to Amsterdam. Do I have to pay extra? Or can I count the weight together with my baggage up to 23 kg. How do we measure the baggage 158 cm? Hope you will answer soon. Next week I am flying. Best gds.

  • Petra

Hello guys, @Basil - according to Lufthansa's overview you are allowed only one free baggage up to 23 kg as US - Jordan is not listed in the exceptions. However I would advise to check the link bellowe where you can find all the details.

@ingrid - Additional bag up to 23 kg costs €75 in Economy Class. All excess baggage fees can be found at http://goo.gl/AR2hCY.

You can find the complete overview of fees and allowances at http://goo.gl/dwGSj

    Hi Lynn,
just to clarify - WhichAirline.com is not connected with Lufthansa in any means and we do not have any detailed info about baggage from Lufthansa. However, as I wrote in my previous comment, I would say you are only allowed 1 bag for free in Economy Class as UK - South Africa routes are not listed in the "Different free baggage allowance" section (see http://goo.gl/dwGSj). I am afraid I cannot help you more and would suggest to contact Lufthansa call center if you want to get more precise info from Lufthansa's support.

Hi your baggage information is extremely confusing. I,had to go to Heathrow to check about my baggage weight as there was no info on my ticket! I tried to contact Lufthansa 2 days running to no avail!
Your tel no starting 0871 charges 41p min???? What a rip off....

When I asked the assistance at the Lufthansa desk at term 1 heathrow today she said she didn't know anything about 2 x 23kg
bags as I am going to South Africa via Frankfurt. It states on your website if one is travelling to various countries incl SA u can take this amount?? Plse clarify as I really am having a problem trying to get info!!!! Not very clear.....thank you, PS I am flying Dec 8th, on flight 915 to Frankfurt, to johannesburg. Thank you Lynn outram

    Hi Idorenyin,
in fact, you can only bring up to 32 kgs in one luggage, otherwise it will be carried as cargo. You can find the rates for up to 32kg bag at http://goo.gl/xg8dNm - if you need to carry more I would suggest to contact Lufthansa directly.

are you allowed to take 2 suitcases providing they do not exceed 23 kgs?

  • Petra

    Hello JRH,

even though Lufthansa has US version of website it also uses kg/cm. Here you are the basic dimensions in inches and weight in lbs:
    55×40×23 cm = 22x16x9 in inches
    30×40×10 cm = 12x16x4 in inches
    158 cm = 62 in inches

    23 kg = 50 lbs
    24-32 kg = 53-70 lbs
    33-45 kg = 71-99 lbs

(please note all numbers are approximate)

    Hope this helps!

  • JRH

Please make it easy on us--translate cm to inches and kg to lbs. Thanks. --JRH
